The melody

The Terra Melody in Detail Notes and harmonics Comprising of the notes G C E F G C E G the Terra melody corresponds to C major. Each of its eight steel rods is tuned by hand, with reference to 432 Hz, until it finds its right place within the harmonic ensemble. Thanks to a harmonic correction specific to Koshi, the lower and higher notes naturally respond to one another. This sonic architecture gives Terra its depth, its stability and this sense of living harmony, always in tune, even when the notes appear in an unexpected order. The four melodies of the 4 Elements collection were designed to be played alone or in dialogue with one another within the same collection. Terra, Aqua, Aria and Ignis can therefore respond freely to one another: their chords remain coherent, whatever combination is chosen.

Terra is the lowest-pitched scale in the 4 Elements collection. Its warm and enveloping timbre may evoke strength and stability, with low notes that establish a calm and deep presence. Each rod sounds its fundamental note, but also more subtle harmonics, which resonate with the instrument as a whole. From this conversation between the notes emerges a continuous, deep and soothing halo of sound.

Use

How to Play the Koshi Terra Chime Basic movements Hold the Koshi Terra chime by its cord and let it hang freely. Turn it gently with a slight movement of the wrist: the central clapper sets the rods into vibration and brings forth a cascade of clear and enveloping notes. The broader the movement, the more the rods are set in motion. Or swing it gently in a pendulum motion to play individual notes. The Koshi chime can also simply be suspended, allowing the wind to play it through melodies that are always unexpected. During Meditation The melody of the Koshi Terra chime can, for example, introduce and conclude a meditation session. In Sound Therapy and Sound Yoga In sound practices, the Koshi Terra chime naturally finds its place alongside singing bowls, gongs or other harmonic instruments. Its lightness allows practitioners to move it easily through the space, to open a sequence, mark a change of rhythm or guide listening towards silence.

Technical details

Handcrafted Production and Specifications Hand-tuned in the Pyrenees Every single Koshi Terra chime is handcrafted at the foot of the French Pyrenees. The craftsperson solders with silver eight steel rods onto a metal base, then tunes them one by one, with meticulous attention to their pitch, the accuracy and the balance of the whole. The bamboo resonance chamber amplifies the vibrations and gives the Koshi chime its long, warm resonance. How a Koshi chime is born

The resonance chamber

The resonance chamber

The resonance chamber gives the Koshi chime its voice. It receives the vibration of the rods, amplifies the sound and reveals its colour.

In our workshop, each chamber is designed with particular attention to the material, form and balance of the instrument. The bamboo used for the 4 Elements collection and the European woods used for Earth Symphony are selected for their acoustic qualities and durability.

Tuning

Tuning

At the base of the chamber, a metal structure holds eight or twelve rods, depending on the collection. They form the sonic heart of the Koshi chime.

Each metal rod is cut to a precise length, which determines the pitch of its note. A fraction of a millimetre can make all the difference.

Then comes the most patient stage: tuning. Rod by rod, each one is listened to and adjusted until every note finds its right place in the harmonic ensemble.

No device can replace this attentive listening. It is the tuner’s ear that knows when a rod sounds true.

Final listening

Final listening

When the wood and metal have found their balance, the instrument must still prove itself.

The Koshi chime is set in motion, listened to, then adjusted if necessary. The notes answer one another naturally, the harmonics linger, and the ensemble gives voice to its first melody.

This final listening session in the workshop marks the birth of the instrument. When the chime speaks with a pure, living and harmonious voice, it is ready to leave the workshop.
