The Workshop

In our hands, material becomes instrument. Sound, a manifesto. In our workshop in the Pyrenees, we create instruments with pure sound, from balanced forms and noble materials. Guided by a desire for harmony, we believe that a true and soothing vibration can connect beyond languages and cultures.

Manifesto

Handcrafting a Koshi chime
Assembling the rods of a Koshi chime

We believe that a true sound can re-enchant our relationship with the world. That an instrument designed with care can open a space of calm, listening and presence. This conviction has guided each of our gestures since 1986.

Creating a vibrant and soothing sound experience also means weaving a universal language, capable of connecting beyond words and cultures.

Beyond the object, it is an experience of feeling and sharing, inviting us to perceive the beauty of the world. To vibrate, to enter into a sensory experience that goes beyond us as much as it recenters us.

In this sense, we hold the conviction that every note, every intention, every action contributes to writing this score.

Our workshop in France, at the foot of the mountains

More precisely, at the foot of the Pyrenees, the mountain range where Kabir, musician and creator of Koshi chimes, invented his first harmonic chime in 1986.

A team of craftspeople works there, to the rhythm of the material, in a human-scale workshop whose know-how is recognized worldwide. Each instrument follows its own pace of making and leaves the workshop when it is ready.

Embodying What We Believe In

Harmony

Harmony is the happy sum of singular notes that enrich one another. This founding principle guides each of our gestures to bring to life instruments that make hearts beat higher and invite a life in harmony with the living world.

High Standards

At Koshi, there is no magic, but meticulous craftsmanship, applied at every stage of creation. It is the high standard that allows us to offer a true musical and sensory experience, capable of resonating within each person.

Care

Towards humans, towards the living world, towards ourselves: care is a driving force. Every day, we do our best to embody a fairer way of manufacturing, respectful of people as well as nature.

How a Koshi Chime Is Born

Bamboo resonance tubes

The Resonance Chamber

The resonance chamber gives the Koshi chime its voice. It is what receives the vibration of the rods, amplifies the sound and reveals its color.

In our workshop, each chamber is designed with particular attention paid to the material, the form and the balance of the instrument. The bamboo wood of the 4 Elements collection, like the noble woods of the Earth Symphony collection, is chosen for its acoustic qualities and durability.

Metal rods prepared for tuning

Tuning

At the base of the chamber, a metal structure holds the rods, eight or twelve depending on the collection. They form the sonic heart of the Koshi chime.

Each metal rod is cut to a very precise length, which determines the pitch of its note. One hundredth of a millimeter can make all the difference.

Then comes the most patient stage: tuning. One rod after another is listened to and adjusted until each note finds its right place within the harmonic whole.

No device can replace this attentive listening. It is the tuner’s ear that knows when the rod sounds right.

Final Listening

When the wood and metal have found their balance, the instrument must still prove itself.

The Koshi chime is set in motion, listened to, then adjusted if necessary. The notes answer one another naturally, the harmonics linger, and the ensemble gives voice to its first melody.

This final time of listening in the workshop marks the birth of the instrument. When the chime speaks with a pure, living and harmonious voice, it is ready to leave the workshop.

Our Commitments

We believe in a fairer world, founded on sharing, responsibility and unity.

With our instruments, we want to contribute to writing this story, through pure and universal sounds that speak to the heart.

We do not only design instruments that soothe and connect: we are committed to embodying a way of working in harmony with the world.

Behind every gesture lies the conviction that human beings must rediscover their rightful place, in care and respect for the living world.

Listen, feelthe Koshi melodies

Each melody opens up a different quality of listening. Explore the collections, compare their soundscapes and choose the instrument that makes your heart beat.
